Dezentraler Panoptismus
The essay explores the ways in which digital subjectification radicallychallenges the distinction between privacy and surveillance. Blogging selves, their practices, and their motives serve as telling examples of the fact that certain technologies are not mere prerequisites for sociocultural practices, but play an active role in constituting the network of psychic, collective, and technical milieus of subjectification. With almost unlimited options for exposing oneself and keeping track of others, social media can be conceived of as an instance of decentralized panopticism: As much as the individual is under (self-)surveillance, it operates as a telematic subject continuously controlling and creating subjectifying interactions from a distance.
