Promising Synchronisation: Sermons and Hymns at the Turn of the Year. Since the introduction of the Julian calender (45 BC) most European nations celebrate the beginning of the new calendar year on January 1. The Early Church was reluctant to react. Only during Reformation did the concept of the “new year” obtain a place in the church service, and with this concerning this matter new hymns were composed. At the end of a year the subject of „time“ obtains general attention. An analysis of selected hymns shows in which ways “time” has become the object of the church services at the turn of the year.
