Zwischenzeit und Zwischenraum
In the works of singer-songwriters, the first person singular opens up a complex polyhedron of deictic and temporal references at the level both of fiction and beyond. When a song’s ›first person‹ talks about his or her own death and/or postmortal existence, thispolyhedron becomes most remarkable, reaching out into areas of time/timelessness inaccessible in this life. This transgression of everyday thinking is facilitated by the use of spatial images for death and postmortal existence. As can be shown in selected songs by Reinhard Mey, Franz Josef Degenhardt, and Hannes Wader, the spaces of death and postmortal existence produce ›effects of the Third‹, blurring the lines between life and death, different modes of immortality, etc.
