This article interprets the various strands of Polish national movements in the late nineteenth century as constituting a counterworld. Representing a nation without a state, these movements strove to establish a new political order and therebyto transform the status quo. Such public rituals as the burials of “great men” were used, among other means, to formulate, spread and popularize this world-view. The article analyses the burial of Jozef Ignacy Kraszewski (1812 –1887) in detail as a case study, and argues that the event as a whole, including the preparations for the funeral and the discussions afterwards, can be understood as an arena (Anselm Strauss) in which different historical stakeholders acted out their vision of the present and thefuture of a Polish “nation”.
