»Dem Krill auf der Spur«
In the context of global resource issues that were high onthe political agenda in the 1970s Krill brought together stakeholders from science, politics and economics. This little shrimp-like crustacean near the bottom of the food chain did not onlypromise to provide enough protein for a growing world population. It also paved Germany’s way into the Antarctic Treaty System and led to the foundation of the Alfred-Wegener-Institute for Polar and Marine Research in 1981. Marine biologists and fisheries scientists played a crucial role in this story. Their knowledge provides access to this potentially immense resource and opened the door to the Antarctic Treaty System.
