Einführung: Lebensraum Meer. Globales Umweltwissen und Ressourcenfragen in den 1960er und 1970er Jahren
This thematic issue advances the theory that the oceans should be considered part of the contemporary history ofWest Germany. Three main aspects guide this proposal: oceans are spaces of global history ; their study could enhance the understanding of the global processes and conflicts which affected the Federal Republic of Germany during the long 1970s; the oceans were considered to be one of humanity’s last reservoirs of inexhaustible resources in times of planetary scarcity. The Federal Republic of Germany was interested in exploring and using oceanic resources for economic, scientific, and political purposes. The entanglement of science, technology and politics played a crucial role in ocean exploration, and generated a specific form of environmental knowledge which has not been investigated.
