The Empire as Family Affair
Abstract: For the Russian nobility, family life was never a purely private matter, but an important vehicle to become involved with the empire. Drawing on the example of the Mansurov family, the article argues that family factors are among the key driving forces that shaped the lives of Russian nobles. Three aspects of this family-based involvement with the empire between 1850 and 1917 are analyzed in depth: intraimperial mobility, patronage relations, and institutional loyalty. Operating successfully in these areas required the cooperation of both male and female family members. The study of noble family affairs thus casts light on women’s participation in the Russian empire.
