„Nicht aus den Niederungen des Hasses und des Aberglaubens“
An “emotional history” of anti-Semitism has to explain why important protagonists of modern anti-Semitism in Imperial Germany were interested in masking the emotional dimension of their worldview by denying feelings of hate or envy. It is argued that these academically educated men followed the middle-classnorms of restraining those emotions, which threatened to contradict the self-perception of an enlightened citizen. Moreover, as a political movement anti-Semitism could not rely on the unsteady basis of emotions, but had to transform them into amore long-lasting psychological attitude. The article takes a closer look at the rhetorical strategies used in this negation of negative emotions by leading anti-Semites.
