Zivilisierungsmissionen und Wissenschaft. Polen kolonial?
On the eve of World War II the Polish Sea and Colonial League – a mass organisation of about one million members – propagated colonies as a solution for Poland’s social and economic problems. This action has been regarded as a singular phenomenon, brought about by an extreme nationalistic turn. The article however shows connections between Polish scientists and explorers and European colonial endeavours and institutions in the 19th century and draws attention to colonial mentalities and civilising missions undertaken by Poles in Siberia and in Cameroon. It suggests that further research is necessary into Polish colonial entanglement and Polish society’s attitude towards colonialism in the 19th century.
