Mütterreich Mexiko
Repeated references in Max Frisch’s work of the 1950s depict his trips to Mexico more or less unashamedly as a virtual return to the womb. This is not the only aspect that places this work within a European tradition of characterisingMexico, a tradition that Frisch himself linked to D.H. Lawrence and Sergej Eisenstein among others. On the basis of their works on the Latin-American country, similarities of discourse can be perceived, which enable us more thoroughly to grasp and expound on echoes of Johann Jakob Bachofen’s Mother Right theory, ever present in Frisch’s representations of Mexico or Guatemala.
