Human Security, fragile Staatlichkeit und Governance im Frühmittelalter
For a long time, medievalists have discussed whether there were states in medieval Europe or not. German medievalists have got used to the idea that the political order of medieval societies is not to be analyzed in terms of state, security, or governance. The article argues that we should not push the medieval orders aside as „premodern“, „strange“, or „alien“. Instead, the current shifts concerning the concepts of state, nation and security provide an opportunity to overcome the established dichotomy of premodernity vs. modernity as a pattern of interpretation. Thus, different historical forms of the organization of power and the production of security could be made accessible for present political debates.
