Die Historisierung der Sicherheit
This article inquires into the contribution which history as an academic discipline can make to security research. By critically discussing articles by Steffen Patzold, Cornel Zwierlein, and Eckart Conze, three ways of historicizing security are presented. First the analysis of security practices in the Middle Ages that show that even without state structures basic security can be provided. Second the problematization of insurability in early modern times, which draws the traditional classification of historical epochs into question. Third the utilization of the concept of “securitization” to historical settings in order to reconstruct different ways to deal with danger and uncertainty. Historical accounts of security, these contributions demonstrate, are an essential corrective to the rather static understanding of security in political and social sciences. At the same time, social science concepts promise a fruitful field of application if taken as historicized heuristics for the exploration of specific problems of a “security history”.
