Übersetzungen in der Geschichte – Geschichte als Übersetzung?
The opening essay addresses the ubiquitous interest in ‘cultural translation’ among specialists in the field of cultural studies, and explores the potential of this concept for historical research. The author outlines current research in this area and draws attention to a wide range of concrete fields to which the concept of ‘cultural translation’ and translation as research topic may be applied. It does, however, not advocate a fundamental realignment, but rather a broadening of horizons. The author argues that the concept of ‘cultural translation’, whose limits are also discussed, facilitates new ways of looking at apparently familiar phenomena and increases historians’ awareness of changing modes of communication, of their supports, and of the significance of the contexts in which they operate. As such, the concept allows for a fresh and elaborate approach to established questions arising in the field of cultural history.
