Human Beings –more than a Product of their Brains? On the Relevance of Hypotheses and Insights fromNeuro-Biology for Pastoral Care and Counseling. The latest findings on the physical representations of thought and emotions in the chemistry and physics of the brain do not prove the reductionist hypotheses to be inevitable. The cultural effects on brain development also have to be taken into consideration. Life does not gain by monistic explanations which reduce life to the spectator perspective; in the relational experiences of humans different perspectives on what is happening enrich human life. Theology emphasizes the value of interpersonal relationships. It is humane to not believe one could figure out others and even oneself completely ; this is only God’s job. How close emotions and thoughts are intertwined, however, has been shown again by the neuro-biological findings.
