Solimans ›ungeschicktes Theater‹
When Robert Musil, in an early draft of Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften (The Man Without Qualities), recasts the role of Arnheim’s servant boy, he fundamentally alters the latter’s characteristics. Formerly the Catholic son of a sacristan, brought up in obedience to the principles of honesty, the servant is now turned into a farcical ›little Negro boy‹ who can be described and understood as one of the ›coon jesters‹ or ›coon servants‹ who had their heyday in 1920s and 30s Hollywood cinema.
