Die Politik des Schweigens
From the historian’s point of view, it is important to acknowledge that audiences make the performance of music meaningful and relevant. This article argues that the impact of concert performances depends less on their musical content than on the power of the social relations involved in musical reception. The reception of music by audiences establishes a link betweenmusical production and society. One section deals with the change of cultural practices and the new evaluation of musical taste. It demonstrates how inattentive audiences evolved into listeners during this period. Public acts of self-discipline during concerts were used for the identification and the demarcation of audiences.Musical behaviour increasingly led to culture wars among audiences, which therefore constituted a form of politics. Middle class concertgoers, fighting to legitimate their new lifestyle, frequently accused the aristocracy for displaying uneducated manners during performances.
