In the 1970s and 1980s, Western European and American concepts of the global changed profoundly. The article illustrates this by tracing discourses on global interdependency in this period. From the late 1960s onwards, ideas about the “limits of growth” prompted efforts by experts and supranational organisations to solve economic, environmental and social problems on a global scale. But these endeavours also prompted a countercultural criticism of the ideology of growth, development and progress, as well as of materialism and ethnocentrism, which was heavily influenced by the notion of “One World”. A “glocal” ethic emerged which considered Western consumer practices and living standards in global terms.
