Gott und die Wahrheit
God and Truth. Philosophical and theological considerations on man’s ability to know and the knowability of the worldThis article is concerned with the question whether and how the concept of truth and the concept of God are interconnected, as some philosophers and theologians suggest. In the first section (“truth in thinking”) it is discussed whether it is possible for man to rationally know things and (approximately) discover truth and especially whether this is possible on the basis of a strong naturalism. Several thinkers are presented who claim that man’s ability to rationally know fits in well with a Christian view of man as created in god’s image, but fits badly (if at all) with a naturalistic worldview. In the second section (“truth in things”) it is discussed whether the world outside of man is knowable and truth about the world is a meaningful concept, and if that is the case, how it can be accounted for. Several thinkers are presented who claim that the intelligibility (knowability) of the world best accords with a Christian view of the world as creation of God. In conclusion it will be argued that – given a certain understanding of truth – it makes good sense to see the idea of god standing “in the back” of the idea of truth.
