Zwischen Helden, Tätern und Opfern
This essay examines ten contemporary museums in France, England and Germany that represent World War I and II in a permanent exhibition. Focussing on heroes, victims and perpetrators, the text tries to show the memory-making power of display. Its analytical dividing lines run parallel to the different national memories and the dissimilar memories ofWorldWar I andWorldWar II. From this perspective, the essay tries to answer two questions: How do museums display perpetrators and victims and deal with the difficult subject of wartime guilt and responsibility? And who are the heroes and victims of the wars? These issues are combined in the question how museums of a post-heroic society re-evaluate these wars and war in general: Do they legitimate it as a political means or do they reject it on principle?
