Die Kartierung der Palaosinseln
The article examines the history of the first European map of the Carolines by a Bohemian Jesuit with a particular focus on knowledge transfer and competing conceptions of space during the era of European colonial expansion and overseas evangelization. Although Jesuit cartography contributed to the symbolic “colonization of space” (W. Mignolo) that accompanied political conquest overseas, it was driven by a distinct missionary “cosmovision” (Luke Clossey) that could facilitate the incorporation of indigenous perspectives into European cartographic representations. Thus the first map of the Carolines contained traces of the islanders’ spatial views that were erased only in later editions of the map.
