Die Agrarische Transition
The Agrarian Transition is the process of transforming agrarian into (post-)industrial societies. Deagrarianization does not only describe the continuing decline of the agrarian sector, measured by its contribution to the economic production or its percentage of the total labour force (depeasantization). It also implies the decline of the political power and the cultural hegemony of the landed elites as well as of the prevalence of agrarian mentalities and values, the change of the patterns of production, living and settlement (deruralization). The inter-war years were the most critical period in this process. In a state of relative equilibrium and in times of continued economic crisis, the agrarian elites and the agrarian sector, respectively, were still strong enough to resist the breakthrough of modern industrial society or, at least, to attempt to slow down this development by aligning itself with radical and authoritarian movements and/or regimes.
