Die Genese des Intellektuellen im Prozess der Kommunikation
This essay explores the cooperation between Voltaire and the manuscript periodical “Correspondance littéraire” in the course of the Calas Affair (1762–1765). This model case of “non-professional but legitimate” (Lepsius) commitment in favour of the victims of religious persecution and judicial error illustrates the emergence of the intelligentsia as a distinct communicational pattern of the French Enlightenment. The study of the literary review, edited by Grimm with the assistance of his friend Diderot and exclusively addressed to the members of royal dynasties, opens up new vistas on strategies of intellectual action in the Enlightenment. Grimm’s secret periodical provided a protected communication space for the consolidation of the parti philosophique under Voltaire’s leadership. It played a major role in the creation of a solidarity-network among the representatives of European ruling elites.
