James F. Tent is Professor and Chair of the History Department at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He was born in Ridgewood New Jersey on January 15, 1944 and majored in history and German at Dartmouth College. His Ph.D. is in Modern German History at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He researches 20th-century German society and politics. He has held guest professorships at the University of Hannover, 1982-83, and at the Free University of Berlin, 1985- 88. His five most important studies are: Mission on the Rhine: Reeducation and Denazification in American-Occupied Germany, Chicago, 1982, The Free University of Berlin: A Political History, Bloomington, Indiana 1988, E-Boat Alert: Defending the Normandy Invasion Fleet, Annapolis, Maryland, 1996, Editor, Academic Proconsul: Harvard Sociologist Edward Y. Hartshorne and the Reopening of German Universities, 1945-1946. His Personal Account, and In the Shadow of the Holocaust: Nazi Persecution of Jewish-Christian Germans, Lawrence, Kansas, 2003.
